Smart Insights for the Hospitality Industry with Data and Design

About

TAPP is an innovative, data-driven platform for hospitality entrepreneurs. This platform helps over 4,000 businesses gain market insights and run their operations more efficiently. In late 2023, TAPP officially launched its new app. As a Microsoft Certified Partner, we collaborated with TAPP and several of its partners to handle activation, data analysis, back-end and front-end development, and create a fresh new branding.

Following thorough data cleaning, which allowed for better insights from available data, and an upgrade to the visual identity, the TAPP app now aligns even more closely with user needs. The fresh, new look perfectly reflects what TAPP wants to convey: technology and hospitality, hand in hand. Hospitality business owners have embraced the new app, as shown by a tenfold increase in users.

Actionable insights in an indispensable tool

The driving force behind this project was the growing need among TAPP's partners to scale. Beverage producers, in general, lack insight into the sales data of their clients, the hospitality businesses, and therefore don’t know how much or which drinks are being sold. TAPP, however, does have this insight but also recognized that hospitality business owners generally don't have the time to dive into complex sales dashboards. What they do need are actionable insights.

The project's goal was to generate insights from the massive data lake of sales data from connected point-of-sale systems. Our aim was to quickly create a Minimum Viable Product (MVP), providing Dutch hospitality businesses with an indispensable tool to capitalize on opportunities in their product offerings and pricing.

Microsoft played a key role in the project, both in selecting Triple as a certified development partner and in collaborating with their developers. In addition to app development, the migration of the cloud infrastructure from Amazon AWS to Microsoft Azure was a crucial aspect, with Triple playing an active role.

Always the right insights at hand

For busy hospitality business owners, time is precious. That's why we developed a mobile-first web app that's easily accessible. This web app provides insights into market trends for popular drinks and pricing, built using a combination of Django for app development and Cube.js for data aggregation from Snowflake. Thanks to these technologies, users can access real-time data and take action. The app was completely rebuilt with a new design and features that weren’t available in the previous version.

The new branding reflects the warmth and hospitality of the industry. The design combines modernity with warmth, using both serif and sans-serif fonts, alongside a retro-inspired color palette. Rounded corners and visual elements, playfully reminiscent of a serving tray, create an inviting experience that perfectly aligns with TAPP’s values and the hospitality industry.

Advanced data analytics

A key feature of the revamped TAPP app is the integration of advanced data analytics capabilities. For TAPP, we implemented a detailed measurement plan for Google Analytics to closely track app usage. Data from HubSpot and GA/BigQuery was stored in the Snowflake database using Airflow, providing a solid foundation for extensive data analysis and reporting in Tableau.

This approach delivered valuable insights, helping measure the success of the activation campaign, and determining how often users returned. This data can also be used to track how hospitality business owners interact with the app, identify which features are most valuable, and pinpoint areas for improvement. These insights enable targeted app optimizations, continuously enhancing the user experience.

Agile collaboration

A core aspect of our collaboration was the highly intensive lean and agile approach. Through iterative processes, we were able to constantly validate ideas and test prototypes. This meant the team focused on what was truly needed, adding value immediately. Thanks to short feedback loops and regular user testing, we quickly adapted to user needs and insights, resulting in a product that closely aligns with the desires of hospitality business owners.

In just six months, we worked intensively with a large team from various organizations and developed an innovative and successful product. The clear focus, direct communication, and high level of freedom and responsibility led to a fantastic end result. We transformed the TAPP app from a simple data dashboard into invaluable insights for users. Technology and hospitality, hand in hand.
